Pomp and Circumstance

Pomp and Circumstance” is known as “The Graduation Song.”  It was written by Edward Elgar and is played at almost every graduation ceremony.  In fact, each year at Northwoods, we play  “Pomp and Circumstance” for our 5th Graders at their graduation celebration during our last All-School Meeting.  Click on the links below to learn more about this uplifting piece of music.

Family Fun Musicals

Here are some fun musicals for you to enjoy!

The Wizard of Oz is a musical about a girl named Dorothy, a girl living on a farm in Kansas with her aunt, uncle and dog Toto. One day, a tornado whisks the farmhouse far away with Dorothy and Toto inside. They land in a magical land and meet lots of interesting people while they journey to Oz to find the Wizard who can help them get home. Choose three (or more!) songs to listen to and complete their activities.

Listen to and sing along with Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Dorothy is having a bad day and dreams about going somewhere where everything is perfect. What do you like to do when you are having a bad day?

Listen to and sing along Follow the Yellow Brick Road. Dorothy is going on a journey to find her way back home. When it is safe to travel, what places do you want to visit?

Listen to and sing along with the friends that Dorothy meets in Oz. What would you wish for if you could have anything in the world?

Mary Poppins is a musical about two children, Jane and Michael, who need a new nanny. They are pleasantly surprised by the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins. Embarking on a series of fantastical adventures with Mary and her friend, Bert, Jane and Michael try to pass on some of Mary Poppin’s sunny attitude to their preoccupied parents. Choose three (or more!) songs to listen to and complete their activities.

Listen to and sing along with Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
How many words can you spell out of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?”

Listen to and sing along with A Spoon Full of Sugar. “A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine goes down” is something that Mary Poppins says. What does it mean?

Listen to or sing along with Step in Time. Dance along with Bert.

Listen to or sing along with I Love to Laugh. Tell jokes to make someone laugh.

Listen to or sing along with Let’s Go Fly A Kite. What do you like to do with your family for fun?

The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while deciding whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children and their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. Choose three songs (or more!) to listen to or sing along with, and complete their activities.

Listen to and sing along with The Hills are Alive. Maria loves the mountains and music.  What are 3 things that you love?

Listen to and sing along with My Favorite Things. Maria sings this song when she wants to feel better. Think of the tune of this song and rewrite a verse to include things that make you happy. Share your verse with Mrs. Rowe and Mr. O.

Listen to and sing along with Do Re Mi. This song helps you remember the names of solfege syllables used for singing. Rewrite the song using things that might help you remember the syllables, such as “Do, I knead when making bread.” Share your song with Mrs. Rowe and Mr. O.

Listen to and sing along with So Long, Farewell. The children all say goodnight to their guests. How would you say goodnight? Rewrite a verse to fit your goodbye.

Listen to and sing along with The Lonely Goatherd. The children create a play with marionettes. Create a performance to share with your family or stuffed animal audience.

Patriotic Sing-along

Memorial Day Celebration - Sing-along!

Veterans Day is November 11.  On this day we honor men and women who have served in the military.  There are 5 branches of the military; the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guards and Marines.

Monday, May 25 is Memorial Day.  Memorial Day is a day when we honor those men and women who have served in the military; but are no longer with us.  Usually there is a Memorial Day Parade in Eau Claire.  In addition, people often visit cemeteries and plant flowers in memory of their loved ones.  This year, there will not be a parade and many cemeteries may not allow visitors.  But, you can STILL celebrate Memorial Day by singing these wonderful patriotic songs along with Ms. Miller!

Music Staff Lesson (Grades 3-5)

This lesson is taught at the end of 3rd grade.  We use the music staff to play instruments.  The instrument we all use in 4th grade is the recorder.  We continue to play recorder in 5th grade.  This knowledge of the music staff will be used in middle school Band, Orchestra and Chorus!

The Music Alphabet starts and goes in the same order as the regular alphabet, except that it is much shorter...
ABCDEFG

And it can repeat ABCDEFGABCDEFGABCFEFG

When we put it on the staff (4 lines, 5 spaces) we can say this rap.

LINES
EGBDF (snap or clap)

SPACES
